DD6HW2

Graphics are incredibly important to my profession, which would be to be a Biologist. In order to convey certain data and give an accurate representation of research conducted, graphics are often the best method of visual representation. The best method by which a Biologist can convey their research would be through a graphic, as the audience would appreciate the simplicity and ease at which the information is relayed.

DD6HW1 Chapter 6 Info about Your Field

e. 1) One major discovery currently being conducted within the Biological sciences would be the research into bees. Currently, the bee population is decreasing at an increasing rate, and conservative measure are being put in place in order to slow down this effect. Research currently conducted includes research into how bees pollinate, and how reproductive measures can be increased to increase bee population.

2) Fungus is a topic that is currently under heavy inspection by the Biology community, as fungus can be detrimental to plants and can harm the growth of gardens. On the contrary, new research is being conducted that is discovering positive effects of fungus; fungus can actually increase growth within partnering plants. Research is also being conducted into the detrimental factors of fungus, the research shows that the fungus can inhibit a key protein within plants that helps their immune system. Due to these factors, fungus is harmful to plants.

3) Recently the population of butterflies within the UK have been on a rapid decline. Research conducted currently show that the extreme effects have caused this decrease of butterfly population. This, in part, is due to the global warming that has had a harsh effect on the world. With increasingly variable weather patterns comes a detrimental effect on biodiversity, we see organisms being adversely impacted. Thus, conservation methods are incredibly important to be put in place, as they can result in a  positive impact on butterfly population and biodiversity.

DD5HW4 Project #1

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B6NX_kdLu4VaREN6a2xjRXlpM1E

The purpose of this assignment was to create an informational manual that could be used industrially to give cohesive, easily readable instructions to a group of students. The specific audience for this project was an industry, or a work place in which the media device could be use readily. Ideally the manual would be printed as a hand out and would be stapled on walls around a work place. In case anyone needs to refresh themselves of the information contained in these handouts or simple learn a new skill. The editing part of the project could be easily used by any movie maker within the workplace. These skills could be used to contour the movies that are being made into more cohesive pieces of art. The saving portion of iMovie can be used by anyone who is making any piece of art or creating a new art. The save feature is typically found in the same place in every different type of media, so if an individual masters iMovie's save feature they will likely be able to use it in any form of media. Importing media can definitely be used by movie makers as it connects the bridge between the filming of the media to be used, and the use of the media within iMovie.

I am very proud of the fact that I was able to make three cohesive hand outs that can be used in any work place. I was very anxious about the project as I was unsure I would be able to make a handout that can be easily read and used by anyone, however I believe that I did a good job on it. I have seen handouts before within work places and believe that my hand out can match up with these hand outs. One thing I wish I had time to further expand on is the visual pieces within the hand out. In order to make the hand outs easily readable I believe that more visuals would definitely have helped. The one thing I got stuck on within the project was being unable to think of the different features within iMovie that I could feature within the hand out. In order to compensate I believe that I made documents that were pertinent to the key features that anyone would need to use iMovie. If someone was to read these documents flat out, they would be able to use iMovie's basic features. I overcame this problem by planning and organizing my project into separate, distinctive parts that made it cohesive.

The technologies that I used for this assignment was Google Drive, Dropbox, iMovie, and Microsoft Word. They were the appropriate technologies that I needed in order to complete this project as I didn't need any new technology to make the hand outs. I had already known how to use most of these technologies, however I did not know how to edit the visuals that I was using in the project. I hope to be able to learn how to use iMovie in depth and create a movie as I have always had ambitions to be a movie maker. I would definitely use iMovie in order to create a movie for a project or to simply try my luck at being a film maker. One course outcome that I believe I worked towards in this assignment was being able to use key rhetorical concepts to analyze and compose a technical text. I found that I worked towards this course outcome when I was proofreading and editing my projects. Another course outcome that I worked towards was being able to critique and analyze different multimedia texts with technical content, I worked on this when I was proofreading two of my peer's essays and evaluating them for consistency and grammar. The last course outcome that I worked towards was being able to classify and attend to ethical responsibilities of technical writing by reading our assigned textbook and contouring my project accordingly. I tried to include all the correct grammar rules and writing tips in my project when I was rewriting it. One personal goal I worked on was being able to reflect on my writing and develop a new style of writing, which is technical writing. I did so by creating this manual and making it cohesive. I learned that I am a good technical writer, however I need to plan out my thoughts beforehand so I don't get overwhelmed. If I do so, I have the ability to create a great piece of technical writing.

DD5HW2 Proofreading

I focused on the grammar category of editing while I was editing my draft. I found that the correct use of grammar, whilst avoiding sentence fragments, can really add to the cohesiveness of the media. In addition, I found that the removing ambiguity from the manual would help the reader understand exactly what the writer is referring to. In order to do so, I made sure to bold the necessary elements of the manual, separate the manual into distinctive steps, and make it reader friendly.

DD5HW1 Emphasis

By revising my own draft, I found that I need to be more coherent with my ideas and thoughts in my project. In addition, I found that in order for my project to be more informative, I would need to make it more organized and informational. By adding clear titles, pictures and headings, I made the draft mores coherent and easily understandable.

DD4HW3 Reflect on PR

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LqXftV2GcwumZjIjHc_m0ajvypt5KGo1tGoDO5bCTf0/edit

By reading and reflecting on this draft, I was able to understand the different organizational ways that a handout can be written. In addition, I learned of the simple grammatical errors that are possible within a literary piece unbeknownst to the writer.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KLJik5jeJghb-AIdhDezQc-kiHf0pIJKRcAZ1d49PLc/edit

By reading this draft, I was able to realize the purpose of visual aid in media. Without media, it is difficult for the reader to completely understand the directions and follow them to the dot. In addition, I was able to understand how succinct a handout could get, with organization it is possible to make the handout more aesthetic and informative.

DD4HW5 Plan Design Revisions

I will be revising my instructional documents in an array of manners. In order to make the document more accessible and professional, I will be aligning the visual aids and the instructions to be clear. In addition, I will be using contrast to show the possibilities available within iMovie, for example, if you don't want to do "x," you can do "y." I don't believe I will be using chunking, however filtering could be useful when giving instructions. Often it is helpful to show exactly "what" a consumer can do with the available options in a media. In addition, the layout of the paper would be very useful tool to utilize while organizing the handout. I could possibly lay out the paper in a way that makes the instructions easily readable by anyone. I believe that the typography is fine, it does not need much alteration as it is clear and can be accessible by anyone. The titles/headings seem fine, but I could use more headings to make the paper more organized.

DD4HW4 P#1 Usability

I conducted the usability test with my roommate, Brock, within my apartment room. He said that the application was the proper one for the task at hand, he would definitely use iMovie to create a film in the future. He relayed the politeness of the brochure and the professional mannerism of it. He stated that it lacks organization, and perhaps needs visual guidance for the second two handouts as they are quite involved. Based on my usability experience I believe that my handouts are very helpful and can be used by any average joe, however, they lack the organization that can be found within a professional handout. I will definitely organize the handouts a lot better in order to improve their usability, as I can see exactly where the handout could end up if I organize it better.

DD4HW1 GSP

The first topic that I chose for this assignment was the use of semicolons. I find that I use semicolons often within my writing, the semicolons can be useful when used properly, but often they can be misused by the writer. Semicolons take a long sentence and divide it properly and effectively, adding to the effectiveness of the sentence as a whole.

 http://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/Semicolons.html

The second topic that I chose for this assignment was the use of a period. The period goes hand in hand with the semicolon as an effective means of separating a long run on sentence. I believe that I use the period effectively in my writing, however a little clarity was helpful on this topic.

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/periods.asp

I also chose to read about commas as I have a bad habit of overusing them. I believe that a comma has stylistic capabilities, however if it is used to frequently it can ruin the reading.

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/commas.htm

The final topic I chose was avoiding long sentence. I definitely have a habit of maintaining long sentences while writing without an effective period. In order to repair this, I researched into it and found this website.

DD3HW2 P#2 Outline

Within my Project #1, one function that I will be providing instructions for is the ability to import video from a cellular device. This cellular device could be either an iPhone or an Android, however the key feature would be to import a recently recorded video directly into iMovie. Within this function a visual will be very necessary, as the instructions would rely heavily on the reader's ability to locate the necessary parts of iMovie. I will also be providing instructions on how to name the movie that they are using, including the "save" feature, which allows the movie to be saved into any folder of choice. I will not be needing a visual for this, as the feature is elementary and is not too involved. The final feature I will be showing is how to edit the movie. This will need a visual as every step is very involved and can be hard to communicate across words.

Import a Movie: In order to import a movie I will have to explain how to connect the phone to the laptop or computer, and how to import a file from that device. This will likely include a visual graphic of every step of the process, as the process can be hard to communicate with words. In order to import the film, I will likely be needing to show how all the files from the phone will be accumulated into one spot within iMovie, which are then ready for editing.

Save Feature: This is likely the most important feature of the entire process, as the film that the video maker creates could be lost very easily with just one simple mistake. Thus, it is imperative that the film maker know how to save the film after every little alteration. I could use visuals for this step, however the save feature is rather simple and should not require a save feature.

Editing the Movie: In order to show how to edit the movies with ease, I will likely be using visuals. This will include combining several little movies into a cohesive unit. This will also likely include transitions and music; visuals will be needed wherever necessary.

DD2HW6 Researching Existing Instructions

One very useful resource that I found to be helpful for iMovie was a Youtube channel by "Eric Timmer." Within this Youtube channel, there are a plethora of videos that are incredibly useful for any beginner using iMovie. If I was to be beginner in iMovie I would definitely look to Youtube as an initial resource, as it combines visual aid with audio aid. This Youtube channel would be great for when I need help with iMovie, as iMovie is an application that has widespread use in all areas of media.

DD2HW5 Analyzing Example Instructions

http://www.cvisd.org/cms/lib/TX01001642/Centricity/Domain/23/PDF/popplet.pdf

Effective Process Description:

Within this manual, effective process description is heavily used in order to make the instructions easy to follow. It includes instructions, with pictures that correspond to every instruction. The passive voice is used in order to shift the focus on the materials rather than the individual who is using Popplet. Effective Process Description is useful as it relays instructional information effectively with visual aid to accompany it. However, a more effective method of relaying this information would be through a flowchart, as it would help narrow down the reader's reason for using the website.

Visual Aid:

In order for the manual to be effective, a variety of different visual aids can be used. Within this Popplet manual there is an incredible number of pictures that go along with the subheadings for each instruction. Visual aid is always helpful, as the reader can see exactly what they need to see within the actual application. However, the visual aid could be organized in a more useful manner which seems more logical.

Subheadings:

In order to better classify the information that is being presented within this manual, the information is divided into subheadings that are easily accessible. Subheadings are very useful as they are easily accessible to the reader, however they aren't useful when there are subheadings for every piece of information, which occurs in this manual. There are subheadings for instruction being presented within the manual, which defeats the purpose of a subheading, which is to clump data for easy access.

Pros:
Similarly to the manual for Popplet, which is shown above, VoiceThread has an incredibly descriptive manual that features a multitude of subheadings. In order to make the job of the reader a lot easier, the authors of the manual have included subheadings that are pertinent to any audience, whether you are a new reader or an expert at VoiceThread. The application gives you troubleshooting aid in case you are lost while using VoiceThread, and has preempted any sort of disaster on the user's part with a variety of possible instructions that the reader can use. These instructions are all accompanied by a slew of visual images that pertain to the instructions that are delivered. The combination of all of these elements make for an effective tool, which is the VoiceThread manual.

Cons:

In accordance with our last manual, which was for Poppet, the subheadings are incoherent and lack any form of connection. If one was to access the VoiceThread manual for the first time, they would be rather lost within all the jargon and the plethora of subheadings that apply for all of the variety of functions that VoiceThread offers. If there were a more detailed table of contents, albeit there is one however it is not as detailed as possible, the new users would find the manual very useful and handy.

Pros:

During my research for creation of a youtube video, I stumbled upon a very informative blog from "Digital Trends," which is a technology based forum. This blog happens to be incredibly useful and informative, as it contains the simplest jargon accompanied by simple instructions for beginners. If I were to be a new user to Youtube, with a video already shot on my camera, this blog would be the first place I would visit, as it contains every single resource that I would need. The blog contains a list of steps, which is similar to the Process Description that is outlined in our book. This is effective, as it outlines a list of steps that a user can take in order to gain the exact outcome they desire in the least amount of time and using the least amount of effort as possible.

Cons:

Although this blog is incredibly useful for new adventurers into the world of "Youtube," it is accompanied by almost zero visual images. The article is simply words, which may be drab for the daily user who just wants to get to make their video the fastest that they can. So in this way it is not suitable for the average beginner, however, this blog is also not suitable for the expert, who is looking for a troubleshoot for his non functioning Youtube video. Filled with elementary terms, a seasoned veteran of video making would simply gloss over this blog, not paying attention to any of the steps that are outlined as they are already known to the content creator. In order to assuage the seasoned veteran and the beginner, there should be a link to a more advanced manual for Youtube videos, in tandem to the blog currently presented.

From: Ishaan Mehta
Subject: Microsoft Word Templates
Date: October 15, 2016

The purpose of this memo is to evaluate a resume template that Microsoft Word comes with.

Summary

This Microsoft Word template is useful for a job fair, however it is not thorough enough to be useful in a demanding job interview.
This resume template falls short due to its brevity. A proper resume should be lengthy and should have a long list of skills and accomplishments that an employee can show a prospective employer. This template falls short as it simply has a couple of subheadings that an employee can briefly look at. If an individual were to apply to an important position in a company, this resume would not suffice as it simply does not have the necessary elements for a resume.

This Resume Template Can Be Very Useful

I chose to evaluate the basic resume template for Microsoft Word. This template seems very professional as it has a great outline that employers would love. It is very brief and professional looking, it looks excellent for some sort of job fair where the employers only have a couple of minutes to look at each resume. This is a great way to get your foot in the door at a job interview and present yourself briefly, if you are able to contact the employer following the interview you could plug yourself even more.

DD2HW4

I plan to use iMovie for this assignment, as I have never used it in my past and have heard a lot of positive things about it. Many of my favorite video makers are avid subscribers to iMovie and its editing software, so I would love to get a hands on experience with the software. It could prove to be useful if I were to make some sort of video for a project in the future. Knowing how to create a movie and edit it to perfection is a very essential skill for any sort of project.

DD1HW8 Chapter 14

To: Dr. Bose
From: Ishaan Mehta
Subject: Corvette Manuals
Date: October 15, 2016

The purpose of this memo is to explain the rhetoric that a Corvette manual uses to cater to a specific car owner and a public audience.

Summary

Corvette manuals, like other manuals, have a very specific rhetoric which is easily readable by a general audience. Car manuals are generally utilized by car owners who have issues with the car, so the car manual will attempt to be as easily readable as possible.

How Corvette Manuals Cater to a Specific Audience

Within this corvette manual there is a specific and detailed table of contents which give a general outline of the manual. This is because the audience is often owners of Corvettes that have broken down, thus the manual must be detailed and organized for an easy read. In addition, the manual features minimal jargon, as the audience is likely not informed car owners, but rather casual drivers.

How Corvette Manuals Serve Their Purpose

This manual serves the purpose of any other manual, which is to be informative and helpful. It includes a plethora of pictures and visual aid that make the manual helpful to any audience. This makes the manual readily available for any audience to read and understand.

Action Items:
I recommend that you check out this manual, it has an incredible depth to it that surpasses other manuals. It includes a very organized and concise list of instructions, separated by subtitles and catering to a generalized audience. This manual is an excellent resource if you are a Corvette owner, or if you're simply just looking for a great piece of literature that exemplifies organization. I recommend this be done as soon as possible as manuals aim to be as modern as possible.

Read: Corvette Manual
Research: Different types of manuals and their generalized appeal

What I Revised in This Memo

I added a paragraph of the purpose of the manual. The original memo was very focused on the reasons why the manual caters to a general audience. However, a critical part of the manual that was missing was the conversation of purpose. The manual serves an important purpose, which is to be informative and helpful, and includes a variety of pictures in order to do so. In addition, I added recommendations, as typically memos end with a recommendation for the recipient.

This is my neat little work area. It is slightly messy at the moment as I have been working for the past couple hours without any time to clean it up. I get a great view of the sunrise and love the natural light that shines onto my work space!

This is my desktop, as you can see I love being organized, even on my desktop!

Who am I?

Hi! My name is Ishaan Mehta, I am currently a sophomore at the University of Arizona studying Molecular and Cellular Biology. I aim to one day be a medical student the University of Arizona at the University of Arizona Medical College. I am currently writing at my work space, which consists of a desk in my bedroom within my apartment. My Macintosh laptop is my tool for writing, and it has served me very well over the past couple years. I personally love writing and have always indulged in new methods of communication.
